History:

Sølje, meaning "shiny" or "sunny" , began as a protective piece, a silver bauble that protected children from being stolen in their sleep by trolls. As time passed, sølje became symbols of protection for vulnerable times in life.

They are traditionally given as gifts at three important phases of life: birth, 16th birthday and marriage.

The pieces are usually made of silver and feature three signature Solje elements: ‘tears,’ ‘mirrors,’ and ‘hearts.’

The ‘hearts’ reference the intricate silver wirework, symbolising love.

The ‘mirrors’ refer to the silver discs plated in gold, said to ward off negative energy as they reflect bright sunlight and positivity.

The ‘tears’ are pear-shaped, yellow gold-toned drops suspended from the main design. These are said to protect by making noise to show strength against any negative parties.
